A favourite amongst Canon wildlife and sports photographers, the Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L USM Extender 1.4x lens is an impressive bit of kit. The lens has a 200-400mm native focal length, but it has a trick up its sleeve. It comes with a built in 1.4x converter built-in, which transforms it in to a 280-560mm f/5.6 lens. Furthermore, if you mount the lens on a Canon EOS camera with a APS-C size sensor it offers the equivalent field of view to a 300-840mm f/4-5.6 lens.
Canon’s USA’s recent product video shows the sheer amount of engineering that goes in to creating such a versatile lens. Some stylish camera work shows off the different sections of the lens, before all the individual parts are revealed.
We counted 115 different parts, but there is no sign of any screws or washers. To be honest, it all looks pretty straightforward. Perhaps Canon could sell the lens in flatpack kit form? Could you imagine searching the floor for that one tiny missing part you need to finish your new lens?
