Canon has announced an update to their G9X compact camera, the Canon G9X Mk II. Like other cameras in Canon’s GxX series, the G9X Mk II is aimed at the more advanced compact camera users. Like similar models from Panasonic and Sony, the GxX range features raw capture and larger 1″ sensors, with the top of the range models offering a lot of physical controls.
However, the G9X Mk II sits at the entry-level of Canon’s prosumer compact range. As such the Canon G9X Mk II has a touchscreen, rather than physical dials, and lacks the zoom range and larger aperture lens of the more advanced G7X Mk II.
Sensor and lens
The G9X MkII features a variable f/2.0 to f/4.9 aperture. Though it’s fast at the wide end it closes down quickly, reaching f/2.8 by the time you get to a 35mm equivalent focal length. The 1″ sensor means the 10.2-30.6mm zoom range equates to a 28-84mm zoom in 35mm terms.
Thicker than a smartphone, smaller than a camera with interchangeable lenses…
On the plus side, the lack of a faster, longer lens makes the G9X MkII the thinnest and lightest member of the GxX lineup. Plus it’s still available in the silver and tantastic finish featured in our images. If tan leather and silver isn’t your thing then a rather more pedestrian black version will also be available.
Evolution, not revolution
The Mark II sees only some minor improvements over the original G9X. The biggest change is inside, where Canon have incorporated their Digic 7 processor, first seen in early 2016. This should speed up the responsiveness of the camera, improving the frame rate (up to 8fps from 6fps) and also performance in low light.
Canon also say the processor improves functions like face tracking and AF, though again these are incremental improvements over the previous model.
Power and connectivity
It’s now possible to charge the G9X Mk II’s battery over USB without removing it from the camera. Though it’s nice to have the option to keep a spare battery on charge for when you need it.

And as well as Wifi and NFC, Canon have included a Bluetooth Low Energy connection. This will allow you to pair it with a smartphone once and have the device remember the camera even if it’s switched off. This is a great improvement over having to do the Hilarious Dance Of Bluetooth Pairing whenever you want to upload something to Instagram via your phone.
Canon G9X Mk II: Pricing and availability
Overall then it would be hard to recommend the G9X Mk II as a must-have upgrade to any Mk I users out there. But if you’re a fan of Canon’s colours and don’t want the added bulk and expense of something further up the GxX range, it could be worth a look. It will be available in February, priced at £449.99.
