By now we all know that the Panasonic LUMIX GH5 is capable of very impressive internal 4K at 30fps, 10-bit colour depth with 4:2:2 subsampling. However, via its external HDMI port it is capable of upping that to a stonking 60fps - which perfect for all you slow motion junkies. Up to know to make the most of this functionality you would need an Atomos Shogun Inferno, which costs almost £2000. However, today the Austrilian company has just announced its latest recorder, that has been specifically designed to match the requirements of GH5 users, the Atomos Ninja Inferno.
The monitoring and recording solution will allow 4K 60fps 10-bit 4:2:2 footage to be captured directly from the GH5’s sensor, and then saved in Apples industry standard Pro-Res format. Footage is monitored on a 7inch 1920×1080 resolution LCD panel, but it is the brightness of the panel that steals the show. The custom lit LCD has an Atomos backlight that offers a screen brightness of 1500 nits, perfect for use in sunlight, but more importantly helps to produce an HDR-like image on the screen. Creating the correct exposure when shooting in a log mode can be difficult, but the display of the Ninja Inferno will allow videographers to see, almost, the full range of tones as they will look when viewed on an HDR display.
And it does all of this for $999
UK price is £875 (ex. VAT), so £1050 retail. Stock is shipping, so you can have an Atomos Ninja Inferno for your shiny new LUMIX GH5 as early as next week!
“For less than $3k it’s an unbeatable total package especially when considering having 4K HDR content ready for clients, Netflix and YouTube is a must”.
Jeromy Young CEO and co-founder of Atomos
With HDR displays to be the next big thing in terms of monitor and display technology, the Ninja Inferno will future-proof filmmakers for the next few years, whilst making the most of the new generation of 4K capable cameras, such as the Panasonic LUMIX GH5 and Sony FS7.
