The Sigma FHR-11 Filter Holder is a rear filter holder designed specifically for the Canon-fit Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM ART lens. It won’t work with the Nikon or Sigma fit versions of the lens, because there is not enough space to fit it.
Rear filter holders like this secure a gel-type sheet filter at the rear of the lens and are typically made for ultra-wide angle lenses, where a glass front-mounted filter is simply not practical.
The Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM ART lens is a case in point. This 1.17kg beast of a lens has a gargantuan front lens element. Any front-mounted filter would have to outsize that imposing sizeable front and would cost through the roof.
Gel-type filter sheets are not included with the filter holder. They can be purchased from specialist retailers - you’ll find a bunch of filter sheets, such as ND filters, through a basic internet search.
The Sigma FHR-11 Filter Holder is supplied with a guide template in order to cut out the filter sheet for a precise fit, plus the fixing screws needed to attach the holder to the lens.
Sigma FHR-11 Filter Holder Installation service
Attaching the filter holder to the lens is a fiddly business. To do the job right and in order to avoid damaging the lens, both practice and the right tools are required. For those that have neither, Sigma has announced an installation service alongside the launch of the filter holder.
We reckon the service is worth taking up - the lens retails at £1679, which would make for a costly error should things go wrong when attempting the job.
Pricing and availability
Sigma’s installation service is available towards the end of September 2017. The suggested RRP of the Sigma FHR-11 Filter Holder is £34.99 (inc VAT) or £59.99 (inc VAT) for the installation service, with the FHR-11 included in the cost.
