A large part of the appeal of compact system cameras for a lot of users is the flexibility of the lens mount. Without a mirror to worry about, it’s possible to use a lot of vintage glass on modern sensors, whether that’s to capture a specific look, make the most of your existing library of lenses or to take the edge off the digital perfection of more recent camera hardware.
Until now, older semi-mechanical Nikon lenses have been harder to use this way than more recent fully electronic ones - although Fotodiox now claim to have solved this problem with their new Nikon to Sony E-mount Fusion adapter.
The adapter features an aperture lever and a tiny motor that’s controlled by the Sony camera body’s electronics. What this means in practice is that you can get the benefits of autofocus, AF confirmation and image stabilisation even though you’re not using a Nikon body, and even though the lens itself needs a mechanical link to the mount.
The adapter itself is made from one solid piece of metal and offers a stable connection to the camera without play even for large, heavy glass like the 14-24 seen in our video above.
The adapter should be shipping in the next few weeks and will be priced at $350 US - could be worth picking up if you’re a Sony user with access to a back catalogue of Nikon lenses sites.
