This year marks 80 years of Polaroid, and the instant print company has started the year off by announcing a brand new instant camera, the Polaroid Pop.
The Polaroid Pop combines a 20-million-pixel sensor and Polaroid’s own ZINK - Zero Ink Printing technology. The result is an instant print digital camera, that produces classic 3″ x 4″ prints, on a 3.5″ x 4.25” paper, so you get that classic Polaroid white border.
For composing your images, and navigating the camera’s menu, there is a large 3.97″ touchscreen LCD. A dual LED flash should help provide fill-in flash for those all important party shots and selfies. And you can also video those social moments as the Polaroid Pop can record 1080p full HD video. A microphone and speaker are built into the camera for audio recording and playback, and there is also image stabilisation. No word yet on whether stabilisation works with video, or if it is mechanical, optical or digital. Both images and video can be saved to a Micro SD card.

As you would expect, the Polaroid Pop has a companion iOS and Android app that allows for images to be edited before printing. Speaking of which, the printer uses heat to activate cyan, magenta and yellow dye crystals that are embedded in the paper. As no actual ink is used, the prints are long lasting and there is no fear of smudging them as you pull them out the camera. You also won’t need to shake the prints around in the air either, something that was never recommended by Polaroid in the first place.
The Polaroid Pop is expected to go on sale towards the end of 2017. There is no word yet on UK pricing.
