South Korean lens manufacturer Samyang has announced details of a new Samyang XEEN 20mm T1.9 cine lens. Branded under the XEEN range of lenses, the new 20mm T1.9 lens expands the XEEN lens line up to 8 lenses - 14mm, 16mm, 20mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm and 135mm.
The new manual focus XEEN 20mm T1.9 lens covers full frame sensors for a truly wideangle view, and is available in PL, Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony E, and Micro Four Thirds (MFT) mounts. Mounted on a camera with an APS-C sensor it becomes the equivalent of a 30mm lens, whilst it is a 40mm equivalent on a MFT sensor. With half an eye on future, Samyang state that the XEEN 20mm T.19 can resolve 4K resolutions ‘and above’. So the lens should be futureproof against the next generation of video resolutions.
Impressively the lens has 11 aperture blades, which should ensure an almost perfectly circular aperture, resulting in naturally smooth looking out of focus areas.
As part of the Samyang XEEN cinema lens range, the lens has both metric and imperial focus distance measurements. Like other cinema lenses, the focus and iris gear rings are placed in identical positions on each lens in the XEEN range. This makes it easy for filmmakers to swap lenses without having to reconfigure focus pulling rigs.
For the last few years, Samyang has been growing it position in the lens market. Moving away from simply rehousing its still lenses, Samyang launched its XEEN brand of dedicated cinema lenses. Last year Samyang introduced it’s first autofocus lenses - a 50mm f/1.4 and a 14mm f/2.8 available for full frame Sony A7 cameras. More autofocus lenses are expected to follow this year, most likely in the form of the50mm f/1.4 and a 14mm f/2.8 lenses in Canon and Nikon mounts.
